Xu Jia and Jake Dennis took victory in Round 9 of the China GT Championship at the Chengdu International Circuit, before taking another podium finish in Round 10. Xu in the #7 Audi R8 LMS GT3 now leads the drivers’ classification heading into the China GT Championship season finale in Zhejiang.
Following his first appearance in the China GT Championship, Dennis will make his Audi R8 LMS Cup debut at the season finale on October 7 and 8.
The action-packed China GT Championship double-header, held during China’s Golden Week holiday, saw Xu start Round 9 from third on the grid. An incident at the start immediately brought out the red flags. Shortly after the race restarted, the pit window opened and Xu handed driving duties over to Dennis. Coming out of the pits in fourth, Dennis moved up to second, behind the sister #8 Kings Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 of Wang Liang and Martin Rump. While the Kings Racing duo would cross the line in first and second, a penalty for an error during the driver changeover demoted Rump and Wang to fifth, while Xu and Dennis were declared the race winners.
Starting Round 10 from pole position, Xu lost a place at the start, with Wang battling to move into third. However, just minutes into the race the #8 car spun and Wang was forced to retire. With the #7 Audi R8 LMS GT3 running in third, Dennis took over from Xu mid-way through the race and helped get the car back up to second, before ultimately finishing third on the podium.
With his success in Rounds 9 and 10, Xu now tops the leader board in the driver championship standings (149 points) with just two races remaining. Despite their challenging weekend, Wang (125 points) and Rump (123 points) are also still very much in contention for the championship title. Next week’s double-header season finale will take place at Zhejiang Circuit.
