BRITISH CLASSIC FORD OWNERS CLUB OF MALAYSIA (BCFOC)

In 1968 when I was a wee young lad, my dad brought home a brand new baby blue Ford Escort MK1 two door. Famously known as the coke shaped Ford for its curvaceous body and timeless design this was the sports car of the 60¡¯s in Malaysia. At a time when the Japanese were selling boring mundane cars to the masses, the British Ford Escort was desirable and somewhat exotic in its looks. My dad traded in his trusty but dumpy looking Morris Minor of 4 years for this then sleek and stylish Escort at the PJ New Town ¡®Ford¡¯ dealership that sold for a then high price of RM4,800.00. Seems little today but at that time this was 1/5th the price of a single storey house in trendy Bangsar Park. Today¡¯s equivalent to an all new Focus I suppose. With a 1.3cc carb fed engine mated to a 4-speed gearbox, the MK1 Escort served us very well until the MK2 Escort was launched. In 1976 my dad traded in his MK1 Escort bearing registration number BU 9166 for a spanking brand new Escort MK2 1.6cc four door bearing registration number WH 8414.
