2005 Formula 1 @ Sepang

F1 is definitely getting more intense in this early 2005 season. Renault has taken two victories - and three podiums - from four races. Toyota and Williams have also proved that they have the pace, as do McLaren and, surprisingly, Red Bull. Just not quite to Renault's level yet. The people who need to worry are, unbelievably, Ferrari. The current car with the 2005 tyres is fundamentally uncompetitive. The new car will not cover this deficit unless the tyres work much better with the '05 chassis. And in the meantime we have four or five teams scrapping it out at the front of the field. Renault's margin is by no means as big as Ferrari's last year, so we can look forward to a highly competitive season. And about time too! Renault is the new benchmark while Toyota suddenly appears to be a different team. Red Bull is much improved from the Jaguar days, while Ferrari, Williams and McLaren are very much on a par. Sepang confirmed this new hierarchy and provided plenty of drama.
